The Chinese lunar calendar (农历 — nóng lì) is one of the world's oldest calendrical systems, with a history spanning over 4,000 years. Unlike the Western solar calendar (Gregorian), the Chinese calendar is lunisolar — it tracks both the moon's phases and the sun's position. Each month begins with a new moon, and an extra "leap month" is added every few years to keep the calendar aligned with the seasons.
